Understanding your current and future competitors is critical to your success. We had a client that was baffled by their success in one market and failure in another when they selected them both to have the same demographics. They understood their buyers, but they failed to understand that the competitive landscape was different in each market. The successful market had one strong competitor while the failed market had two leaving little room for a new entrant. Most companies do Google searches to understand their competition and track their press releases. This is a good starting point but you’re only getting what they want to publish, it takes a whole different skill set to go deeper on research, develop and test theories and ultimately put strategies in place to both defend share and grow it, or maybe even avoid a geographic market or competitor altogether.
